The Summer Reading Journey

Many of us remember when we were children, after school ended in the spring, going to the library and getting our Summer Reading incentive package. We could read a certain amount of books and get prizes. Whether you share this experience or not, this is your opportunity to read this summer and get prizes!

Our theme this year is A Journey through History. Why? Because this is Powell United Methodist Church’s 200th anniversary. What an amazing thing to be a part of a church with this history! In 1825, our church was formed by people gathering to worship on the banks of the river and in homes. Think about that! 1825! How many things have been accomplished since then! And how many heartbreaking events have happened over that time. Just think about your lifetime, how many stories you can tell.

So, get ready! Read this summer and ponder the stories you read about people, events, countries and scripture. They all teach us something about who we can be and how we can impact our community for good.

Scripture Track
This summer we will read the Book of Acts as our scripture. The book of Acts is the 5th book in the New Testament. It was written by the same author who wrote the book of Luke. Acts is a collection of stories about the early Christians who were called “The Way.” The Roman Empire was still a very real and oppressive presence in the lives of these new Christians. These stories take those remaining 11 bumbling disciples into a world they never thought they would encounter…to change that world.
